Christmas

I miss celebrating Christmas in the Philippines. The usual “Pasko na Sinta Ko” (It’s Christmas, my love) and the one from Jose Mari Chan, ‘Christmas in our Hearts” would already start playing around September. You could already feel the exciting Christmas breeze similar as to having butterflies in your stomach which would make you look forward to wearing a sweater and pretend there was snow outside. I remember my family’s routine every year during Christmas Eve.

Since my relatives lived in a compound, cooking would start with kids and adults congregating in the backyard to prepare for some ”halaya” (ube – a kind of purple dessert). It would take three hours to get it to its right consistency but it was all worth the wait especially if eaten with “macapuno” (sweetened coconut strips.) Leche flan, morcon, lumpia, macaroni salad would always be on the menu. My grandma’s sister would always visit us bringing a bilao of sapin sapin and kutsinta – native Filipino delicacies.

Around 6pm, my dad and my uncles would start with their drinking sessions and barbeque. Kids would be the main entertainers by singing Christmas carols, asking money in return, You’d also hear group of kids around the neigbourhood doing their rounds sometimes only having to sing the first line “Ang pasko ay sumapit” until the owner of the house would be forced to give them peso coins. They would have cymbals made up of flattened bottle cups and a tin can with a plastic on top as a drum. From time to time, you’d get the real carolers from the church singing a list of classic Filipino Christmas songs.

Dinner was not served until exactly 12 midnight where we sat down as family to have our Noche Buena, the meal on Christmas Eve. So, we played parlour games – newspaper dance, stop dance, pass the parcel etc Then it was time for the much-awaited event of the night - exchange gifts – monita monito – kris kringle – whatever you call it --- You bring a gift , put a number on it and put it up on a raffle. You pick a number and get the gift with the same number so at the end of the day, everyone gets something! Of course there were your presents from your loads of uncles and aunts, aguinaldo (money) from your Ninangs (godmothers) and (Ninongs) godfathers.

The party and gift-giving would continue the next day. We’d dress up in new clothes and go to the morning mass. The rest of the day was spent going from house to house (apparently they were all related to us) to give our respect, share stories over a meal and be given aguinaldo (if you were a kid!).

At a very early age, I have come to know that Christmas is a time for gift-giving. Now that I have “inaanak” (goddaughters) and a niece of my own, it’s my time share the blessing and make someone else feel that they also a part of the same family.

MALIGAYANG PASKO (Merry Christmas)

While the Catholic Church officially starts Christmas during Advent, Christmas is an entire season in the Philippines. It starts as early as September and lasts until early January culminating during the Feast of Three Kings! I know of no other place in the world where I'd hear Christmas Carols being played over the radio and I'd see Christmas decors being put up in the malls even before Undas (the day in November when we remember our loved ones who have passed) than in Manila.

And so, it is no wonder that I vividly remember the anticipation the day would bring to me as a child. I would see our tree slowly being filled up with gifts underneath, Christmas lights both inside and outside our house (and the neighbors' too!) being lit at night, Christmas goodies and sweets as gifts from neighbors slowly piling up on our dining table. Not to mention that special mechanical puppet show put up in C.O.D. only every Christmas time my parents would take us to see in the 80s, which I was really in awe of. With all of these things around me, I could really feel that there was something special with the crisp, cool air that Christmas brings..

For my family, Christmas day itself was the busiest! We'd start the day with the morning mass on Christmas day, us kids wearing our special 'Christmas' clothes. After mass, lugging our gifts for everyone, we'd be off to one of my Tito's (Uncle in Filipino) house, if not our own (Mom and her siblings took turns hosting Christmas :)), where all of my family from my Mom's side would gather for Christmas lunch. After everyone had had their fill, Papang (what we called our Grandpa in my Mom's side) would sit on his special chair which would be the signal for all the apos (that's us, the grandchildren!) to get themselves ready for their special number.. As children, we'd prepare a song, dance (or both!), a poem, etc. that we'd perform for everyone to watch. It was kind of a requirement, since if you didn't do anything, the premise was you won't get a gift (though now that I think back, this was not true at all -- everyone, whether you performed or not, still got a gift hahaha!) And so, with the little confidence that we could muster for ourselves, we'd put on a brave face, get up and show our 'talent' to get it over and done with.. Looking back, though embarassing enough, this part became part of the fun (and funniest) memories I had as a child. After everyone has performed, Papang and Mamang (our Grandma) would call each of the grandkids and give us an envelope (money! money! hehe..) specially addressed to each of us. And they only asked us to give them kisses from us in return! I can still see the wrappers strewn all over the floor after all of us kids opened all of our gifts at the same time! It was chaos but these were happy times. It's a wonder how our gifts didn't get mixed up with everyone else's. :)

As the sun sets, we prepare to bade goodbye to go to my Dad's side of the family. Though a little more subdued, it was nontheless still special. We always looked forward to dinner, what with Inay's (what we called our Grandma in my Dad's side) cooking, which is always sumptious and comforting. And so, stuffed from lunch (and merienda), we'd stuff ourselves for dinner even more! More gift-giving is done, afterwhich, Tatay (what we called our Grandpa in my Dad's side) would call each of his apos and give us an envelope (more money! ehehe..). I remember the last Christmas Tatay spent with us, it was the first time he was telling stories about his experiences during the second World War to us, his apos, who were intently listening to him we didn't notice we already had tears in our eyes..

So it is no wonder that we'd come home exhausted at the end of Christmas Day. With all the preparation, anticipation and excitement leading up to it, and more than the gifts that I received, Christmas for me has always been about just being with family and loved ones -- sharing (one's time and self), eating (food.. glorious food!), laughing. And now that I have a family of my own, I can only hope that our little one experience the same special feeling of family back home. Needless to say, I will always miss our Christmas in Pinas!

There's only 4 days til christmas while im writing this comment and you can definitely feel the christmas spirit in the air. Everywhere you look there's christmas lanterns, colourful lights...buildings, trees, parks, streets covered with christmas themes. People are nicer, though stressed out with all the shopping, and extra traffic...it's amazing that even if prices are going up, people still find means to give gifts to their loved ones. But it's also nice to see, that above all the seemingly commercial and americanised ways of celebrating christmas adopted by the filipinos, faith and family oriented traditions like the misa de gallo, and noche buena is still being celebrated. The true meaning of christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ is still at the core of the Filipino christmas tradition. There has been a couple of tragedies that hit hundreds of poor families around the country in the last two weeks, fires in quezon city and pasay...and you can see people reaching out and helping these unfortunate families, giving them food for noche buena, toys and school supplies and clothes for the children. It is happening everywhere, especially during the Christmas season...on the streets, in orphanages and poverty stricken districts....people are reachign out to help...celebrating thr true meaning of christmas..and it is really this generousity and compassion that makes the christmas season unique, unforgettable and extremely emotional in the philippines.

Hello. My wife and I bought our house about 6 months ago. It was a foreclosure and we were able to get a great deal on it. We also took advantage of the 8K tax credit so that definitely helped. We did an extensive remodeling job and now I want to refinance to cut the term to a 20 or 15 year loan. Does anyone know any good sites for mortgage information? Thanks!
